Your First Conversation: Teach Hermes Who You Are

A message that has Hermes interview you and save a compact profile to USER.md, with your approval before anything is stored.

You have just installed Hermes and it still treats you like a stranger in every session. Saves about 20 minutes

The recipe

Role: You are getting to know me so you can be useful from day one. Context: My name is [MY_NAME]. I work as [MY_WORK]. My time zone is [TIME_ZONE]. How I like answers: [ANSWER_STYLE]. Task: Interview me, then save a compact profile to your user memory. Steps: 1. Ask me up to eight short questions, one at a time, about my work, current projects, the tools I use daily, my recurring tasks and what I want help with first. Skip anything I already told you above. 2. Draft the USER.md entries as short one-line facts and preferences. Keep the whole draft well under 1,375 characters, because user memory is small and does not compact itself. 3. Draft no more than three MEMORY.md entries for things that are about how you should work with me rather than about me. 4. Show me both drafts with a character count and wait for my explicit yes before saving anything with the memory tool. Rules: Never store passwords, API keys, account numbers, health details or private details about other people, even if I mention them. Prefer stable facts over things that will change this week. Write each entry so it still makes sense months from now. If I answer a question with something sensitive, leave it out and tell me you left it out. Output format: While interviewing, one question per message. Then two labelled blocks, a USER.md draft and a MEMORY.md draft, each with its character count, followed by one line asking for my approval.

Fill in these brackets

[MY_NAME]e.g. Alex
[MY_WORK]e.g. a freelance UX designer working mostly with small software companies
[TIME_ZONE]e.g. Europe/Amsterdam
[ANSWER_STYLE]e.g. short and direct, bullet points, no small talk

Pro tip

Memory is loaded as a snapshot when a session starts, so your new profile shows up after you start a fresh session with /new. Test it there by asking: what do you know about me?

Variation

If you want to review every future memory write, set memory.write_approval to true in config.yaml first. Writes are then staged, and you check them with /memory pending and approve with /memory approve.
