The install is the easy part

A fresh Hermes answers like everyone else's. Memory fills up with half-useful notes. Skills you wrote never trigger. A scheduled job messages you every morning with nothing new. Costs creep up because every message carries more than you think.

None of that is the model's fault. It comes down to a handful of files and habits: SOUL.md, memory, skill descriptions, scheduled prompts that work in a fresh session, and safe settings. These recipes are that work, done for you and organized by what you want Hermes to do.

Every recipe has the same four parts

1. Inputs

A short list of what to fill in, with examples, so you know exactly what the recipe needs from you.

2. The recipe

The message, SKILL.md, SOUL.md text or scheduled job itself, with exact commands and file names from the Hermes docs.

3. Pro tip

One practical note on cost, safety or a mistake that trips people up.

4. Variation

A second angle on the same job: another channel, schedule or use.

Teach Hermes a Preference Once

A message that saves one correction as a single short memory entry, checks it does not duplicate or contradict an existing one, and confirms the exact text.

Hermes just did something the way you do not like, and you never want to explain it again. Saves about 10 minutes

Context: You just did this: [WHAT_HAPPENED]. What I want from now on: [PREFERENCE]. It applies to: [WHEN_IT_APPLIES]. Task: Save this as one durable preference so I never have to repeat it. Steps: 1. Decide where it belongs. How I like things done goes in USER.md (memory tool, target user). A lesson about my setup or tools goes in MEMORY.md (target memory). If it is really a procedure with several steps, say so and suggest a skill instead. 2. Read the matching file in ~/.hermes/memories/ and look for an entry that already covers this or contradicts it. If there is one, plan a patch of that entry using its exact old_text instead of adding a new entry. 3. Write the entry as one plain line under 150 characters that includes the scope, for example: Summaries are 3 bullets plus one recommended action, not for code reviews. 4. Show me the entry, the target, and whether it is an add or a patch. Rules: Wait for my yes before saving. No names of other people, passwords, keys or account details in the entry. If memory is close to full, tell me which existing entry you would shorten to make room. Check: after saving, repeat the exact saved text back to me and remind me it takes effect from my next session. For the rest of this session, follow the preference anyway.

Pro tip: Teach a preference right after Hermes gets it wrong. A concrete before and after (what it did, what you wanted) produces a much sharper entry than a preference written in the abstract.
