A file snippet for config.yaml that makes Hermes ask before it saves anything to memory, plus the commands to review what it has staged.
You want to see and approve every memory entry before it is saved, for example after finding odd or private details in MEMORY.md. Saves about 10 minutes
The recipe
# ~/.hermes/config.yaml (Hermes Agent v0.21.x; check yours with hermes --version)
# Turn on approval for memory writes. If your config already has a memory:
# block, add the line to it instead of creating a second memory: key.
memory:
write_approval: true # default is false: Hermes saves freely
# memory_char_limit: 2200 # MEMORY.md, leave at the default
# user_char_limit: 1375 # USER.md, leave at the default
# The same change from the terminal:
# hermes config set memory.write_approval true
# hermes config get memory.write_approval
# If you use the gateway, restart it so chats pick up the setting:
# hermes gateway restart
#
# How it behaves once it is on:
# - In the interactive CLI, Hermes asks you inline before it saves a memory.
# - In gateway chats such as Telegram, and in the background review that runs
# after turns, writes are staged instead of saved.
#
# Review staged writes from any chat:
# /memory pending list what is waiting, with ids
# /memory approve <id> save one entry (or /memory approve all)
# /memory reject <id> drop one entry
#
# Approve: short, durable facts and preferences you would still want next
# month. Reject: one-off details, anything about other people, anything that
# looks like a password, key or token, and long pasted text.
#
# Approved entries appear from your next session, because memory loads as a
# snapshot when a session starts.
Nothing to fill in: use it as it is.
Pro tip
For the first week, run /memory pending at the end of each day. You will quickly learn what Hermes thinks is worth keeping, which also tells you what to add to USER.md yourself.
Variation
Do the same for skills: set skills.write_approval to true, then review agent-made skill changes with /skills pending and /skills diff before you approve them.
